We had so much fun last year, we wanted to do it all over again! This year the Willcox Elks Lodge #2131 5k run/walk will take place on Saturday, November 9th! Join us on a fun and easy route starting and ending at our lodge with a turnaround at the halfway point. Funds generated from this event will be donated to the Fisher House at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System in Tucson. This event is meant to serve as both an event to honor and support a veterans’ and first responders’ charity as well as bring our community together.
The Tucson Fisher House was built in 2015 and opened in March of 2016. Since its construction, it has served over 800 families by providing them temporary housing while their loved ones were receiving care at the VA Health Care Facilities in Tucson free of charge. The Fisher House receives funds from the VA for maintenance, but the bulk of their resources are donation driven. Donations help cover the cost of food, toiletries, and comfort items for guests.
The Fisher House Project was started in the early 1990s by Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher, who funded the first twenty-five houses privately. Since then, the Fisher House Project funds construction of new houses at half of the six-million-dollar investment, while the other half is fundraised and donation driven in the area that to which it will serve. Currently, there are ninety-four Fisher Houses across the world with the goal of one day reaching ONE HUNDRED.
